McCain was right about one thing …

I’m getting complaints about how much emphasis I’m putting in this column on the presidential election and the candidates and their running mates. I don’t actually enjoy writing about politics and all this deadly serious stuff every single day. I’m a woman who loves to write about cats and birds, the beautiful nature of Sarasota, Guinness beer and sunsets, and occasionally poke fun at my own deadly dull social life.

But what should we be writing and reading about when we’re a nation at war in not just one country, but two, our economy is failing, individual rights are being eroded, and our planet is in peril? (more…)

A dog in the fight

Sarah, I’m a ballsy chick, but I’m no pit bull (maybe more of a Boston Terrier). I don’t care for hockey (just a tad violent for my tastes), and I don’t wear lipstick (I’m a gloss gal myself).

But just ‘cause I wouldn’t self-identify with a pit bull, doesn’t mean I’m not willing to jump into the pit and give you a bite or two of my own. (more…)

The straight dope …

I’ve heard from a lot of you via email and postings that you think I’m “on Palin’s side because she’s a woman” — or I’ve “finally come to my senses” — citing last night’s Palin Pulled No Punches column as evidence for both POVs.

Um, did you guys (only men have said either of these things) actually READ the column? Not only am I not on Palin’s “side” — I certainly wouldn’t vote for her as a woman — she’s pretty much the antithesis of a woman I’d break bread with. I might get a kick out of her cockiness but that doesn’t mean I see us bonding over bra-straps in the near future. (more…)

Palin pulls no punches

Wow. Sarah Palin nailed her presentation to the Republican party and the American public. I may not like her politics but I can’t argue with her stage presence. The woman definitely got my attention. (more…)

My campaign promise: I won’t date dumb

In my gazillion years on the dating frontlines, I’ve dated on both sides of the political fence and never have given it a whole lot of thought.

But now the stakes are too high. So high, in fact, that I’ve decided I must establish a thorough vetting process — a sophisticated questionnaire that will reveal whether or not a man’s background, experience, and intellect makes him a viable candidate for the position of Datable Dude. (more…)

McPain’s Macho-esque Mistake

John McPain is running scared. But when you run scared, you always get lost, and John’s looking a little like a befuddled senior who got lost on the way home, wandering around the neighborhood unsure on which door he should knock to find his family. Apparently, he thinks he found his VP family in Palin. All I can say is, hey, his choice just made the work of Democrats that much easier. (more…)

America rocked the house

In addressing America tonight via the Democratic Convention, Barack Obama said this election isn’t about him. “It’s about you,” he said. About the American people.

And he’s right.

Barack Obama, as inspiring, as gifted, as talented and intelligent as he is — he didn’t put himself at this center of this momentous occasion, at this momentous time for our country. Americans did. Americans put him there and he’s humble and gracious enough to know that.

As proud as I am — as thrilled and hopeful as I am — to have Obama as my candidate … as my next President of the United States … I’m even more proud to have — as fellow Americans — the people who put him at that podium tonight.

America, you rocked the house, and I couldn’t be more proud to be counted among you.

Classless at the Convention

The Clintons are rocking the house. Biden is sexy and strong. On the whole a classy affair, n’est-ce pas?

Except for one thing: (more…)

I’m blaming Bill (published in the Tampa Tribune 8/26)

In the over-hyped week before Obama announced his VP choice, I shocked myself by realizing I was harboring a secret hope that he’d choose Hillary Clinton.

Why this sudden convoluted craving for a Clinton?  I didn’t vote for her in the primaries; Obama’s been my choice all along. So, why this rush of hope for Hillary now? (more…)
