Get your holiday groove on
My Sarasota Herald Tribune TICKET column today gives some fun outdoor stuff to do this weekend — starting with some very cool reggae at O’Leary’s tomorrow night. Might be brisk weather, but we can always generate some body heat by dancing!
You can read the column online here Get Your Holiday Groove On or by flipping to page 7E of today’s TICKET.
I LOVE this weather!!!
Later, Gators!
Glad my pick for today’s big Florida game won … as a matter of fact three out of four of my picks played out as I’d predicted in my Thursday TICKET column — ‘Noles Trounce the Gators!
Must be all that hanging around with bookies back in the day in the North End of Boston.
Free/very low cost pet care — for those in financial need — offered by Clark Road Animal Clinic
The Clark Road Animal Clinic let me know that the doctors and clinic team are offering an incredible opportunity for people who love their pets but who might be struggling to care for them during these tough economic times — free vaccinations and routine health care for dogs and cats on December 11! Things to be thankful for ….
This little bird — I think it’s a house wren perhaps — has been hanging in my yard for about two months now. It’s probably a female, but I call it my “old guy.” He flies very tentatively and I believe he cannot see out of his left eye — see how red and inflamed it looks? (the other eye appears normal). He’s also hard of hearing. I sometimes walk right up to him before he realizes I’m there. I think he hears, just not all that well. He sits on the feeder sometimes for what seems like hours, nibbling away. He goes to the bird fountain and sips at the water. When he first arrived back in early September, I thought seriously that he was dying — he seemed so frail. But he seems to be getting stronger and stronger.
I’m grateful I’ve been able to give him a place to rest his wings and get some sustenance. I know it’s goofy, but I love him! (more…)

Creepy crawlie in the carport
Does anyone know what kind of spider this might be?
Eat Prey Dove
So, yesterday morning, I woke to a cacophony of blue jay screeches outside my window, making their many different strident and fearful cries of warning. There may have been only 10 blue jays — but they sounded like 20 or 30.
I went out to investigate. And spotted this fellow on the wires near my bird feeder — the one meant to attract blue jays, cardinals, and similar small birds of song — not birds of prey! (more…)
Tampa Bay Rays Can’t Win for Losing
Last night, I went on a very fun date up to St. Pete to see the Yankees play against the Tampa Bay Rays. Yes, I was wearing my Yankees cap, and yes, my date was a Rays fan. But we still managed to have fun.
The Yankees may have been outmatched in last night’s particular game, but they by far outclass the Rays when it comes to one particular thing.
The Tampa Bay Rays, formerly known as the Devil Rays, changed their name in 2007 — and the brand changed from being about “manta rays” to being “a ray of sunlight” that radiates across all of Florida. They developed a new logo to match this change in sensibility.
Um, too bad, they didn’t develop a new conscience to go along with all the show-me-the-money new branding. (more…)
Update to Cat Depot Saves Pennsylvania Kitties story
One of the greatest things about doing this blog is when I hear about people helping each other because of connections they make or hear about here on this site. We’ve had people donating to All Faiths Food Bank — to the tune of thousands of dollars. We’ve had readers in other states giving me advice and following up on Tony the Tiger. We’ve had local doctors trying to help me get a stray kitty cat into a good home. And now, one of my readers read a blog last week, and took action about the Pennsylvania cats rescued by Sarasota’s Cat Depot story I posted and look, now I’ve received a really super nice blog comment below from the folks at Cat Depot to round the story out.
