Stan Zimmerman’s report: $148 million spent on economic development

If you missed Stan Zimmerman’s report in today’s Pelican Press newspaper — about the $148 million, 148 MILLION DOLLARS, FOLKS, that Sarasota County has spent in the past two years on economic development give-aways, incentives, tax breaks (I just call them BRIBES, and always have, though those are strictly my words, not Stan’s) — anyway if you haven’t read his report, I think it’s required reading.

You can find it in the current issue of the Pelican Press or read it here online: $148 million spent on economic development. (more…)

Great Scott the Scalawag — let’s get to work … right after I blow a few mill on a party for myself

So Rick Scott “can’t wait to get to work” — his words on the night he was elected Governor in Florida. Remember his campaign promises — reduce spending, balance the budget, create 700,000 jobs?

But one of his first priorities is planning his inauguration celebration — and getting special interest groups to pony up $25,000 each for the perk of getting up and close and personal with the new Guv as he’s sworn into office. (more…)

Election Etcetera

I was on the streets and at precincts throughout Sarasota County yesterday from about 7 am to 5:30 pm (with only a short break at my office to squeeze in some “real” work). I was also at the Democratic party at Gecko’s on Hillview Avenue in the evening hours.

Though all the precincts I visited were hopping, it ended up being a low voter turnout — big surprise.

Over the course of about 15 hours yesterday, I was everything from discouraged to dumbfounded by things I heard and saw. To wit: (more…)

Attack Ad “Facts” are Fiction

I dig what Nancy Feehan, candidate for District 70 Florida House, had to say about her opponent Doug Holder’s recent negative television ads which say she’s lying when she talks about his voting record. (She’s not lying — check out the links below if you want to see his voting record).

“While it’s disappointing that my opponent has chosen to go on the personal attack,” Feehan said, “the facts are that Doug Holder has refused to debate me throughout this campaign, and has been a no-show at political events where he would have been asked about his voting record. Since he’s so unwilling to discuss any real issues, and since he’s unable to deny his own voting record, he’s had to resort to tasteless advertising tactics.” (more…)

Super Scary Walking Dead– aka the Non-Voters

Zombie is too kind a word to describe the catatonic state of mind of America. I’m talking about the interior state of its intellect, obviously. Because the mouth and the eyes and the jangly arms and legs, and the hyper-extended eyebrows, are all still popping and bopping like Micheal Jackson Thriller dancers on crack.

I think I’ve seen one too many campaign ads. (more…)

Doug Holder’s Attack Ad is Amateur-Hour

Doug Holder, with his new laughably doltish and amateurish attack television ad against Nancy Feehan, has dug a new hole for himself. (more…)

Vote for Sink … because with Scott we’ll be sunk

After the Sink/Scott debate last night … after all the sad, sad ads — it seems clear to me that neither gubernatorial candidate is anywhere near, really, what I’d want in the person who governs the Sunshine State.

Allegations of fraud, malfeasance, a morass of contradicting finger-pointing … all reveal a kind of stomach-turning nostalgie de la boue on the part of Sink and Scott.

As voters, is it any wonder we’re suffering from mind-boggling malaise? (more…)

Nancy Feehan’s Major Mojo — it’s going to take her from Siesta to the State House

Tonight I co-hosted a get-together at the Old Salty Dog on Siesta Key — with Gene Jones, President of the Florida Veterans for Common Sense organization. It was a “Meet & Greet” event for State House District 70 candidate Nancy Feehan.

Nancy Feehan works the crowd.
