Sarasota firefighters for every month!

Could I get any luckier?!

At my talk at the Sarasota Democratic Club event a week ago, one of my readers and all-round great guy around town, showed up to hear me talk, but also presented me with a present from Sarasota firefighters — who had read my column about the “Monsters of Midtown” in the newspaper recently.

The present was one of their 2011/2012 monthly calendars!

Lots of brave (and beautiful!) women are out there fighting fires, too!

Talkin’ Civility with the Democratic Club of Sarasota

A week ago, I spoke at 1350 Main Street in downtown Sarasota, as the guest of the Democratic Club of Sarasota. The turnout was fantastic — maybe 80 people, which was so great to see. mccoolidgesarasotademsspeechfeb2011-006-2And, more importantly, the people in the audience were very engaged listeners and contributed to the after-talk dialogue. Men of Midtown — my V-Day date with Sarasota firefighters!

Could my Valentine’s Day have been any sweeter? I got to get kind of up close and person with some of the men who keep my city safe.

Sarasota County Fire Department Battalion 1 Lieutenant Craig Gerardi, Firefighter/EMT J.W. Boyette, Firefighter/Paramedics Stephen Willhoite and Todd Tedder, and volunteer Justin Miante.

Civility in an Uncivil World … MC Chats it Up

On Tuesday, February 22, 6:30 p.m., I’ll be giving a short talk at 1350 Main Street (Club Room — sixth floor) on “Civility in an Uncivil World.” It’s a good chance to openly dialogue on something we all seem to agree on — the need for more civility — but which we often find difficult to act on.

Come on down! Seriously!

Saying “I do” — all over again

If you’re married, Valentine’s Day can probably seem a bit redundant, right? I mean, you’ve already wooed — and won — the person who made (and hopefully still makes) your heart pitter-patter.

But it’s essential, isn’t it, to do what you can to keep those love fires burning strong year after year? Read my blog on today’s TICKET website — about what to do to honor your I do’s … all over again:

Chickens … or dogs … fur or feathers in the backyard?

My Sense and the City column this week is all about dogs — why I love ’em, why their owners sometimes bug me, and why I’ll take fur over feathers!

Come as you are …

As you know, I adore Beethoven’s music (and have a serious crush on the man as well). I was flattered to learn that the Sarasota Orchestra wanted to quote one of my blogs about Beethoven in their advertising for the Masterworks Hero — all Beethoven — concert March 10-12. (more…)
