60,000 stray cats in Sarasota? Let’s make that 59,999!!

Did you read Eric Ernst’s recent column on the subject of the estimated 60,000 stray cats in Sarasota county? It’s shocking — and important — reporting. I had no idea there were that many. I’m trying to do my part to solve the problem — I’ve adopted and neutered or spayed three cats and made them a part of my family … but three’s my limit!!

Here he is in front of his carport box and blanket home ... but he wants a REAL home!!

Most of my life, I haven’t had a roof to call my own — I know firsthand what it feels like to wonder where I’d be living a week, a month, a year later. And, I know only too well what it’s like to have a home only at the whim and fancy of someone else. I guess that’s why I feel so angry at people who abandon helpless animals (I’m pretty sure this little cat was dumped out of a car by an owner who no longer wanted or could afford him) and why I’m so empathetic toward these little creatures who have no home to call their own.

So, I’m making one last appeal to everyone I know — look at this adorable little stray kitten — I call him “Little Boy” — who has taken up residence in my carport — and see if you can find room in your heart, bank account, and home to take the little fella in before I have to make arrangements with a rescue center and/or the county.

But, of course, I love him already and REALLY want to find a good, reliable, happy, home where he’ll be loved and cared for. I’m hoping somebody will step up to the plate. Leave a blog comment below if you’d like to adopt this kitty. If you think you know people — good people who would care well for a cat permanently — then by all means, please forward a link to this blog post as well.

And yes, I know there are bigger, much bigger problems in this world, in our community, and in our own individual lives, than the life of this one little creature — but one thing I know for sure: he wants to be loved. Just like we all do. He wants to be safe and secure and know he has a home — just like we all do. Maybe we can make it happen in Sarasota — one cat at a time.
