Home sweet Sarasota

This week’s Sense and City deals with some of the things I miss about Boston … and some of the things I love about Sarasota … like the beautiful “Butterfly Lady.”

Read the full story in tomorrow’s TICKET — waaayyyyyyy in the back and no, sorry, they won’t give me props on the Table of Contents so you’ll just have to dig around ’til you find it (usually next to last page or so, next to the Advice Goddess for which I receive no end of ribbing).

Or read it online by clicking here: Home Sweet Sarasota

Bitten by the blues

Bluestar -- a well-known blues band in Sarasota

Monday night I dragged myself out of the house at 9 p.m., and went to the opening of Ocean Blues (well, it was a soft opening for media-types and friends I think; the actual opening was on Tuesday night if I’ve got my facts straight). Ocean Blues is a restaurant/bar/music venue on Hillview; I think it’s the same location as the former New York New York joint that bit the dust last year or so; and there’s actually some space for dancing … .

Anyway, at the bar, I ran into Laura Daniel Gale — the visionary behind Black Diamond Burlesque. She and I both were wearing necklaces with lots of keys on necklaces around our necks. Mine happened to be handcuff keys, but um, wait, that’s a whole other story.

Bradenton bluesman R.J. Howson sat in with Blustar for a set or two.

Anyway, I wrote about the blues — hearing them … not having them … for this week’s Sense and the City column out today on page 33E TICKET section, Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Or you can read it online by clicking Sarasota’s new house of blues.
